The Chatham Department of Public Works announced on April 2 that its annual hydrant flushing will begin the week of April 6. This year, the activity will be limited due to ongoing drought conditions and will focus on the South Chatham Area.
Hydrant flushing is an important part of maintaining water quality in the community. By cleaning out sediment and ensuring proper operation, this process helps protect public health and maintain reliable water service.
The department said that, as with last year, drought conditions have required a reduction in the scope of this maintenance work. Residents who have questions about the schedule or areas affected can contact the Water Division at 508-945-5150.
Hydrant flushing may cause temporary changes in water pressure or discoloration for nearby homes. The department advises residents in affected areas to run their taps until water runs clear if they notice any changes during this period.
This limited approach reflects ongoing efforts by local officials to balance essential maintenance with responsible resource management during periods of drought.
