The Town of Truro announced on Mar. 31 that it is seeking public feedback through a survey and upcoming forums to help plan a new resilience hub, following disruptions caused by last month’s blizzard.
The effort comes as the town aims to better prepare for future storms and climate-related emergencies. The recent blizzard left many residents without power for five days, highlighting vulnerabilities in local infrastructure.
According to the announcement, Truro recently received a grant to plan and design a resilience hub at either the Library/Community Center, Truro Central School, or a combination of these buildings. The proposed facility would serve as an emergency shelter with renewable backup power, resilient internet, food and water supplies, and possibly overnight accommodations during crises. In non-emergency times, it could also provide services such as food co-ops, community kitchens or gardens, repair centers or maker spaces, gathering areas like coffee shops, healthcare resources, childcare support, and assistance accessing services.
Residents are encouraged to participate in an online survey open until April 21 to share their views on which services are most needed in the community. Several public forums will also be held: Thursday April 2 at 6 p.m. via Zoom; Saturday April 4 at 2 p.m. at Truro Public Library; and Saturday May 9 (time TBD) at Truro Community Center.
Officials say these steps are intended to ensure that future weather events do not leave the community vulnerable for extended periods if outside utility crews are unavailable due to widespread regional impacts.
