The ratio of students to teachers in Up-Island Regional School District rose by 8.7% in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

There were 413 students being taught by 47.4 teachers in Up-Island Regional School District, which covers schools within Dukes County and has a main office in Vineyard Haven. That’s an average of 8.7 students per teacher in the district during the 2021-22 school year.

In the previous year, Up-Island Regional School District had 398 students and 50 teachers on staff.

However, the state is facing a teacher shortage, just like the rest of the U.S. NewsNation reported that the state was offering emergency teaching licenses to educators who only had bachelor’s degrees, in an effort to get more teachers into schools.

Despite the shortage, under-representation of ethnicities among teachers was found to be a concern. The Rennie Center reported that only nine percent of teachers are people of color.
