There were 706 students being taught by 76.6 teachers in Martha’s Vineyard School District, which covers schools within Dukes County and has a main office in Vineyard Haven. That’s an average of 9.2 students per teacher in the district during the 2021-22 school year.
In the previous year, Martha’s Vineyard School District had 689 students and 74.6 teachers on staff.
Massachusetts was ranked as the eighth best state for teachers, according to a WalletHub study.
Despite the shortage, under-representation of ethnicities among teachers was found to be a concern. The Rennie Center reported that only nine percent of teachers are people of color.
